Best breathing exercises for beginners?

Assalam o Alaikum everyone,
I've just started the vocal training course and I'm struggling a bit with sustaining my breath during longer verses.
Does anyone have specific exercises they recommend for building lung capacity? How long did it take you to see improvements?

Wa Alaikum Assalam Ali, This is a very common challenge. I recommend practicing the "4-7-8" technique: 1. Inhale deeply through your nose for 4 seconds. 2. Hold the breath for 7 seconds. 3. Exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 seconds. Do this for 5-10 minutes daily before your practice sessions. You should start seeing improvements within 2-3 weeks. Keep it up!

Great advice from Qari Sahab. Also, try swimming if you can! It naturally forces you to regulate your breathing and expands lung capacity strictly.
